In the past twelve hours or so I have heard (not read, but actually heard, in person) people make two sexist remarks, three racist remarks and one remark against homosexuals. The two sexist remarks were against women, the racist remarks were against Hispanics and Mexicans, and the homosexual remark was against gay men.
Since when is this behavior appropriate? Especially at school?

It's never appropriate, and yet law school often seems to be the breeding ground for it. It's especially shocking when you hearing it during class from the freaking professor. It's just a good ol' boys profession where it's okay to say things like that, until someone changes it. So take a stand and call the person out on it right when they say it! It slowly stops the behavior, and it sure is fun to watch them squirm when they realize what an ass they are being.
It's good to know someone else out there still gets offended. :)
I think a lot of people just think it is funny. It makes me sad to see people act like jerks and be hypocritical like that. Many of these people claim to be open minded and yet find it funny to make fun of others.
You know, it seems like the average age of the law school classes are getting younger each year which may explain the inappropriate behavior. I know I felt like a kid in my year, which made me watch my behavior. But then the next 2 years after mine seemed so much younger.
My class had a nickname for the behavior. We called it Lewis & Clark High because it was so high school...
Uhh I believe such comments are never appropriate.
